In Stephanie Thiersch’s latest production, music and dance, intensities, rhythms and stillness coincide, intertwine and mutually impede each other. The title, “Bronze by Gold”, found in the Sirens episode of Ulysses (J. Joyce), relates to the seductive coexistence and successiveness of contemporary dance, tableaux vivants, string quartet and club music. Each and every one shines, swirls or extinguishes: as a utopian community, seven performers, a string quartet and a DJ are brought to connect with each other, link, pull at each other – playfully and uncomfortably, indulgently and coerced. Bronze by Gold is reminiscent of an eclectic montage. It draws the audience in and shakes up iconic images of a society that celebrates itself, resigns, moves on, and has to survive. The increasingly pioneering sounds created by the Asasello Quartet, ranging from Beethoven's “Grand Fugue” to Márton Illés’ “Torso V” and Hikari Kiyama’s “Raga Phi”, are joined by the pounding bass beats and virtuoso scratch techniques of Dj Elephant Power. 12 bodies become vortexes but nevertheless strive to assert themselves and go against the tide. In a world in which everything collocates and everything appears to self-align, they quest to make themselves noticed, each time in a different manner.
